Foundation of the Company

The company was established by Bernhard Schäfer in Mühlhausen, Germany, in January 1985. After Bernhard Schäfer had set up the development, production and sales operations in his parents‘ garage in Bad Schönborn, the company quickly gained numerous customers for its crimping machine tools and the relevant spare parts. In 1986, when the company started producing special wire processing applicators, Bernhard Schäfer and his wife, Gisela Schäfer, established Bernhard Schäfer Werkzeug- und Sondermaschinenbau GmbH.

Growth and Expansion

Due to its steady growth and the addition of crimping machines and integrated wire stripping modules to its range of products, it became necessary in 1987 for the company to move into its first business premises in the industrial area of Bad Schönborn, where Schäfer Werkzeug- und Sondermaschinenbau GmbH – the Schäfer Group’s headquarters – is still located today. Following the establishment of a mold and stamping tool manufacturing facility in Gerstungen, Germany, in 1992, the company opened its first foreign branch office in the USA in 1993. Beginning in 2002, further branch offices were opened in Romania, Poland, Tunisia and China.

Partner for the Future

By acquisition of the Megomat Group in 2005, fully automatic cable processing machines were added to the already wide-spreaded product range. On launch of further branch offices the raise of company‘s worldwide presence continued. In the same year, son Markus Schäfer joined the management of the family business. Since 2017 son Alexander Schäfer has strengthened the management of the Schäfer Group. With a total workforce of 220 people based at 11 locations and with numerous sales partners providing consulting, training and technical services, Schäfer Group is one of the world leaders in the cable processing industry today.
